Wife of Charles William Hale Snr, and daughter of John Monterey Brickey and Anna Virginia Anderson. It was said that she was the most beautiful woman ever born on Craig's Creek Virginia. She was born and grew to maturity in a two-story log house, the "old Anderson place. Before she became a teenager, there were still Indians living in Craigs County, and she knew them, and one old Indians taught her about making arrow heads. She was the mother of Pauline, Ruby, Richard, Ray, Charles William Jr., and Vernon Eugene. Post Mistress of Waiteville Post Office and proprietor of Waiteville Store from 1925 into the 1960's. Hardworking, generous, and loved by many.
Her homemade biscuits and bread were the favorites of Brickey, Abbott, Hale, and Radford family reunions. During the Second World War, on a foggy night a secret military plane crashed into their mountain place near the top of Potts Mountain. Young army guards were posted there; and when Granny found out the guards had a standing invitation to come down to the Hale farm in twos and threes to get some of the best home cooking in their whole lives. Forty years after the war some of them continued writing letters to Granny in Waiteville, saying that her kindness was the highlight of their military careers. Her one acre garden provided wonderful vegetables for the dinner tables and canning; and when she knew neighbors were in need, generous portions showed up at their gate or on a porch. When grand-kids came for extended visits, one of their jobs was hoeing a row or two of her gardens. When visitors came, many walked out to take a look at the garden before they came in to talk.
Many people, when they come to the end of their lives, will remember Granny as one of the finest they ever knew.
