Elaine Joy (Werda) Ableson
February 6, 1926 ~ April 30, 2015 (age 89)

Elaine Joy Ableson died on April 30, 2015 at the age of 89. Her love, warmth, and compassion for others was reflected back to her by family and care-givers at the end. Her last years were spent at Grandvue receiving the best possible care as Alzheimers took its toll.

Elaine was born on February 6, 1926 in Alpena, Michigan to Frank and Freda (nee Gindt) Werda. She graduated from Alpena High School then attended Michigan Normal where she earned her teaching certificate. She taught in one room schoolhouses near Alpena and Dexter then continued teaching grade school in Wayne and Washtenaw counties. Elaine met her husband of more than 60 years, Hugh Ableson, while attending Eastern Michigan University. She and Hugh started a family and made a home together, raising three children in Plymouth, Michigan.

Elaine’s curiosity and independence took her far from her hometown of Alpena, but she never lost connection with her roots. After her father died, her mother, Freda, came on every family vacation. Holidays were spent in Alpena with Grandma and a very extended family.

After the nest emptied, Elaine and Hugh moved to Mexico City for 5 years where Hugh was deployed by Ford Motor Company. Retirement brought the couple back to the north that they loved, to Boyne City. Elaine enjoyed an active life. She was an avid golfer, a long-time member and officer of the women’s league at Ye Olde Nine Holes. The couple were snowbirds for many years, wintering in Lady Lake, Florida. In recent years they remained year-round in Boyne City.

Elaine is survived by her husband, Hugh; children Hugh, Joy, and Sharon; grandchildren Orpheo, Bea, Ian, Zora, Meggen, Jazcinda, and Toshi; great-granchildren Kylee Joy, Zivah Sophia, Dresden, Hugh Patrick, and Natalia Joy. Elaine is predeceased by her brother, Ron Werda, and parents Freda and Frank Werda. Her descendents are all gifted by her legacy: love and focus on family, raising kids to be independent and strong, a clear sense of right and wrong, and acceptance of others as they are.

A memorial service will be held on May 13th at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Boyne City (1303 Boyne Ave/M75.) There will be a 10:00 am visitation and a memorial mass at 11:00 am. This will be followed by a luncheon in the church hall.

The family respectfully suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations be sent to: Grandview Medical Care Facility 1768 S. Peninsula Road, East Jordan, MI 49727 with a note “in memory of Elaine Ableson” included.

Grandvue’s care of Elaine is so appreciated by her family. It is a facility that is setting the bar for elderly/skilled nursing care, especially for dementia patients. If you have questions, please call Steve Hoffman at 231-536-2286.
