Johnny Criss Abbott, 82, of Ashland, died peacefully Wednesday, June 24, 2020, in Woodland Oaks Health Care Facility.

He was born October 26, 1937, in Ashland, Kentucky, a son of the late Leland and Geneva DeWitt Abbott. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a daughter, Paula Holtzapfel Hylton; son in law, David Billups; brother, Allen D. “Bud” Abbott; and two sisters, Jennie LeMaster and Mary Payne.

Johnny was a 1955 graduate of Ashland Senior High School. He served honorably in the U. S. Navy. He retired following a 35-year career with Armco Steel and was a Kentucky Colonel. He was currently treasurer of the Boyd County Democratic Party and served on the Board of Directors at Members Choice Credit Union. He previously served as treasurer for the Steelworkers Union and North East Fish and Game Association.

Those left to cherish his memory include children, Bill (Debbie) Jones of Ashland, Bill Holtzapfel of Cartersville, GA, Dottie Jones Billups of Richmond, Joyce Abbott (David) Wolford of Lavalette, WV and Allen D. (Sherry) Abbott of Summit; a special niece, Suzan LeMaster Wedding; grandchildren, Dustin Jones, Tyler Jones, Taylor Jones, Jason Holtzapfel, Jennifer Holtzapfel, Chris Disney, Carrie Billups Espinosa, Keith Frazer, Todd Frazer, Maria Frazer, Jarrod Moxley and Steven Moxley; 12 great grandchildren; and a host of extended family members and dear friends.

Visitation will be held on Monday, June 29, 2020 from 6 until 8 p.m.at STEEN FUNERAL HOME 13TH STREET CHAPEL.

A military graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Tuesday, at KENTUCKY VETERANS CEMETERY, NORTH EAST, where military honors will be provided by the U. S. Navy and American Legion Kenova Post 93.
