A son of St. Clair and Anna F. (Wells) Abbott, he married Dorothy Spencer on June 20, 1947 at Champaign, Illinois. She died June 20, 1997. Their children: Douglas S. Abbott, Champaign; Gregory T. Abbott, Champaign; and Cynthia L. Havice, Champaign, Illinois. He graduated from Champaign High School and attended the University of Illinois, Brights School of Design and the Sedalia School of Design in Missouri. He served as chairman of the board of Abbott's Florist, a family business since 1923. A veteran of WWII, he served in the U.S. Navy. An active Free Mason, he was a member of Western Star Lodge No. 240 A.F. and A.M.
