OBITUARY:
Anchorage Daily News September 17, 1997

Anchorage resident Thomas Stanley Aho , 41, died Aug. 29, 1997, while hiking in the Talkeetna Mountains with his sons. A visitation and memorial service is scheduled for 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the Kincaid Park Chalet.

Mr. Aho was born June 16, 1956 in Anchorage. A 1974 Service High graduate, he lived in Anchorage most his life. In 1974, Mr. Aho joined the U.S. Army, and was stationed in Germany. Afterward, he returned to Alaska, where he began his career in telecommunications, working for JW Reed and Associates as a telecommunications installer. In 1983, he went to work for North Slope Telecom Inc. as an installer, and was eventually promoted to supervisor/projects manager. In 1993, he traveled to Chad, where he contracted with Exxon Co. USA to support their Chadian exploration drilling program. In 1978, Tom married Hella Baer Germany, and they had two sons, Brian and Sven. The boys were on their annual visit to Alaska, exploring the Talkeetna Mountains with their father, when he died. In 1994, Tom married Kim Young, and they had two children, Andrea and Philip. ''Tom was a loving dad to all his children, challenging their minds, teaching them the wonders of life and being a good role model,'' said his family. ''Tom loved the outdoors, as well as the people he shared them with.'' Mr. Aho competed in several marathons, including the Mountain Marathon and Alaska Mountain Wilderness Classic. In the winter, Tom enjoyed skiing and sledding with his family. An avid carpenter, he began a remodel project on his first Alaska home, a log cabin his father built in 1968 that he later purchased from his parents. ''I was very lucky to have Tom in my life, even if only for a moment,'' wrote his wife. ''We talked of growing old together, living and loving, a day at a time. The loved he gave was unconditional; my love he received with open arms. He was kind, a perfect gentleman. I will miss him with all my heart.''

Tom is survived by his wife, Kim; children, Brian and Sven, and Andrea and Philip Miller; parents, Stanley and Vivian of Willow; sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Doug Hodgson of Anchorage; brother and sister-in-law, Ron and Dunya of Soldotna; aunts, Maryjane Fernandez of Layafette, Calif., and Doreen Fridell of Seattle; Hella of Esslingen, Germany; father-in-law, George Young of Port Charlotte, Fla.; brother-in-law, Kenneth Young, his wife Rosa, children Kena and Christopher; brother-in-law, Kalvin Young; sister-in-law, Kari Stuart, her husband Jeb, and daughter, Kristina; brother-in-law, Dabney Young, all of Anchorage; sister-in-law, Karena Young of Port Charlotte; nieces and nephews, Jimmy, Gregory, Joey, Shaina and Mathew, niece, Angie Hodgson of Spokane, Wash., and Mike Hodgson of Colville, Wash.; numerous cousins of both families; and many friends.
