J.S. was born the son of the late James Sylvester Hopper and the late Elizabeth Bell Frady Hopper on February 19, 1935. In his professional life he worked for the Fish and Game Department before becoming a technician at the Burlington Factory for many years. He loved to coon hunt, and was an avid fisherman. He always enjoyed being outdoors. J. S. never sat still, and was always finding something to work on around the house. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. All of his grandchildren loved their "PePaw."
In addition to his parents, three brothers, Henry Hopper, John Hopper, Buster Hopper and three sisters, Maggie Copeland, Marie Batey and Irene English, preceded him in death.
