Aleene grew up in Gibsonville and graduated from Gibsonville High School in 1941. She was employed by Kayser-Roth for many years and later GE. After leaving GE, Aleene was a tireless volunteer worker for Alamance County Hospital and Alamance Memorial Hospital as a "Pink Lady" for 15 years. She visited patients with her roving gift cart, and her kind words would brighten the day of many, especially the older lonely patients. Later her cake decorating skills were used to help the volunteer group raise over $10, 000.00 in bake sales. The money was used to fund construction of the new Gift Shop to replace the carts and Aleene was put in charge of buying merchandise for the gift shop. She was recognized for donating over 10, 000 hours of service.
