, was married at least twice. The first time was to Mary Jane Horn, a native of Kentucky, born about 1836, on 16 Nov 1857, in Estill County, Kentucky. The children linked with him on his memorial are the children he had with Mary Jane. In 1860, the couple were in Estill County with their children, Olivine age 2 and Nancy E age 5 months, both born in Kentucky.

During the Civil War, William fought for the Union in Company C of the 14th Kentucky Cavalry. (His widow Martha Irene would file for a widow's pension after his death.) One reference indicates he was a blacksmith and mustered in on August 4, 1862.

By 1870, William age 48, and Mary age 28, were living near the Lee's Summit post office of Jackson County, with their children Olivine age 11, Nancy age 9, Belle age 7, Dexter age 5, and Reuben F. age 1. William, Mary, Olivine, and Nancy were all recorded as born in Kentucky, with Belle and Dexter in Illinois, and Reuben in Missouri. William was farming.

On March 26, 1876, William married Martha Irene Dehoney, in Jackson County, Missouri. It is not known what happened to his first wife, Mary. In 1880, the family was in Galena, Cherokee County, Kansas, William was with his wife Martha Irene and his children: William P. Crabtree age 48, Martha I. Crabtree age 28, Mary B. Crabtree age 15, Stephen D. Crabtree age 13, Ruben M. Crabtree age 11, and Minta J. Crabtree age 9. The last 2 children were recorded as born in Missouri, the other as Indiana. William, noted as born in Virginia, was mining at the time.

In 1885, they are still in the same community, with children Dexter, Reuben, and Minta, all children noted as born in Missouri. That is the last time that William appears in the census records.

His daughter Olivine married Samuel Patrick.

His daughter Nancy E Crabtree, married Hiram E Kreeger. Their daughter, Mamie B Kreeger, who married Harry A Long on 1 May 1902, informed the death certificate for Nancy's brother, Reuben. Nancy, also called "Nannie", Kreeger died in 1900 in Kansas City, Missouri, according to the date on her cemetery marker, and is buried in Forest Hill Cemetery. Her daughter Mamie B Long is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Fort Scott, Kansas.

His daughter Mary Belle first married Frank H Webb in May 1884 in Cherokee County, but the marriage did not last as she filed for divorce in 1893, and he remarried in 1893. They had a daughter together, Ethelyn. Mrs. Belle Webb then married Frank H Albertson in Jackson County, Missouri on 20 Jan 1906, and was Mary Belle Albertson at the time of her death in California. The 1920 census of Kansas City, Missouri, found Belle Albertson, widowed, her daughter Ethelyn [Brockway at the time] single, Ellis R Powers [soon to be husband of Ethelyn] a boarder, and Mamie B Long, Belle's niece, a widowed housekeeper, in the same household.

His son "Deck" married Ida Mae Goff.

His son Reuben remained single.

Minta, born about June 1871 in Missouri, married John W Long in Jackson County, Missouri, on 29 Jan 1900. They are in the 1900 and 1910 census records. He was with the railroad, first a freight laborer, then a brakeman, and was older than Minta, being born about 1859 in Kentucky. They lived in St. Joseph, in Buchanan County, Missouri. In 1920, she was living in Jackson County, Missouri, recorded as married, but with no husband in the home. A boarder, a railroad employee, was living in the household. But no record after that could be proven for them at this time.
