James Buford Ackley was born July 17, 1935 near Hammon. He is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Buford Askley(sic). "Jamie" has gone to school at Hammon all his school years. His favorite song is "They Got Me"; his ambition is to be a star rodeo performer.

James graduated from Hammon High School on May 27, 1954 at 8:30pm.

Devin - Ackley Vows

Nuptial vows were read at 7:30 p.m. Friday, December 23, for Miss Dorothy Jane Devin and James Buford Ackley. David ______ minister of the Church of Christ, officiated at the double ring ceremony in the home of Mr. and Mrs. Rudolf Tucker, Groom, Texas.

The bride is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Luther Devin, Panhandle, Texas. The groom's parents are Mr. and Mrs. Buford Ackley, Hammon.

Mr. Tucker directed music in the background, "Because" and "I Love You Truly" were the selections used.

The room was decorated with snow covered cedar, white mums and fern. The vows were exchanged in front of a large mirror which had snow covered cedar around it; on each side were baskets of mums and candelabra.

The bride, given in marriage by her father, wore a dress of light blue cotton satin with fitted bodice and full shirt. The bride's bouquet was a white orchid with blue and silver trimmings.

Miss Patsy Adcock was maid of honor(sic); her dress was of pink satin. Karl Lovelace served as best man. Farrell Devin and Wade Lewis were candle lighters.

Mrs. Devin, the bride's mother, selected a navy blue suit with matching accessories, and Mrs. Ackley, mother of the groom, chose a navy blue dress with pink accessories. Their corsages were carnations.

After the ceremony the four-tiered white wedding cake, topped with a miniature bride and groom, was served with coffee from a pink covered covered table; the snow covered cedar and candles were flanked by blue carnations.

Mrs. Louis Tucker served the cake, and Mrs. Bill Surratt poured coffee. Mrs. Carley Darnell registered the guests.

Only close relatives and friends attended this wedding.

Mr. and Mrs. Ackley are now living in White Deer. Texas.

They spent the holidays here with his parents and other relatives, going to White Deer, Monday, this week.

At Panhandle, Texas


James Ackley was injured in a cotton gin at Panhandle, Texas, where he was working Thursday, January 2. He was rushed to the St. Anthony in Amarillo, Texas, where it was learned he had a slight concussion.

His parents Mr. and Mrs. Buford Ackley, were with him from Thursday night to Saturday, when he was able to return to Panhandle, to the home of Mrs. Ackley's Parents, Mr. and Mrs. Luther Devin.

In May 1961 James was living in/near Panhandle, Texas.
In January 1967 James was living in/near Hammon, Oklahoma.
In August 1975 James was living in Burns Flat, Oklahoma.

James Buford Ackley Sr., 72, of Amarillo died Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2007.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday in Schooler Funeral Home Brentwood Chapel, 4100 S. Georgia St., with Brian Mashburn officiating. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Friday in Red Hill Cemetery in Hammon, Okla., with Leon Tomberlin officiating.

James was born July 17, 1935, in Hammon to Boots and Jean Ackley. He grew up in Hammon and graduated from Hammon High School. When he graduated, he went to work for Santa Fe Railway. He later married Dorothy Jane Devin. He enjoyed all the travel and the many wonderful people he met along the way working for Santa Fe.

After enjoying working for Santa Fe, he had his own welding and oilfield business. He returned back to Santa Fe Railway and retired from there. He moved to Amarillo to be close to his children. He went to work for Plains Transportation until health problems would no longer allow him to work. James enjoyed watching PBR on television and buying and selling used farm equipment. He loved being "Pap" to all the grandkids and great-grandkids.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Carroll Wayne Miller.

Survivors include a daughter, Sharla Jane Trimble and husband Archie of Amarillo; a son, James Buford Ackley Jr. and wife Melynda of Amarillo; a special daughter, Jennifer Kerstetter and husband Doug of Protection, Kan.; four granddaughters, Jaime Stoll and Leigha Trimble, both of Amarillo, Jamie Brogden of Briscoe and Kyleigh Bartlett of Canadian; five grandsons, Shawn Ackley of Corinth, J.R. Ackley, Adam Ramos and Aaron Ramos, all of Amarillo, and T.J. Trimble of Sayre, Okla.; and many great-grandchildren.

The family suggests memorials be High Plains Children's Home, P.O. Box 7448, Amarillo, TX 79114-7448; or the Red Hill Cemetery Fund, P.O. Box 332, Hammon, OK 73650.
