Erbert Ackerman was born in Laurinburg, NC. He enlisted at the age of 23 in 1940. He boarded the USS Wainwright upon commissioning in April 1940 and served nearly four years before transferring to the USS Herndon in 1944. The USS Herndon was the lead ship of the Allied armada on D-Day. Erbert married Louise Currie and their first daughter, Patricia, was born in 1943. Their second daughter, Doris, was born in 1956 and died at the age of 49 of an aneurysm. Erbert stayed in the U.S. Navy until 1957, eventually earning the rating of BT1, Boiler Technician Petty Officer 1st Class. He and Louise divorced in 1977. Erbert died in 1986 in his hometown at the age of 69.
