Ferd Alonzo Shaffer Jr.

Reno - Ferd Alonzo Shaffer, Jr. passed away at his home in Reno, Nevada on August 27, 2020. He was born on June 26, 1947 to Yetive Clark, née Harding, and Ferd Shaffer in Alturas, California.

In his youth he began his lifelong hobby of bowling. He also enjoyed football, fishing, camping and scouting. He worked alongside his stepfather, Walter Clark at a service station in Alturas. After graduating MUHS in 1965, he joined the US Army and served two tours in Vietnam. He was involved in special operations and was present at the Battle of Hue during the Tet Offensive.

After his time in the Army Ferd moved to Silicon Valley where he met and married Annette Hillan. They moved to Germany for eight years in which time he pursued his passion of speed-skating. He developed other passions such as bicycling, running, photography, skiing, drawing and playing the classical guitar and recorder.

In 1981 Ferd moved to Milpitas, CA, where he raised his two daughters, Loré and Barbara. He worked as a technical engineer at GTE for over 30 years, and dedicated any free time coaching speed-skating. He was a participant in the Speed-skating Nationals and supported many athletes. One of his favorite jobs after he retired was driving the Zamboni for the San Jose Sharks.

In 2017 he moved to Reno and married Nancy Lively, née Brundige. They enjoyed traveling together in their RV, going on cruises, bowling and taking ukulele lessons.

Ferd is survived by his loving wife, Nancy Shaffer, daughters, Loré Kostyanovsky and Barbara Valiando, four grandchildren, sister, Aleta Edwards, and a lifetime of friends. He will be remembered for his generosity, odd sense of humor, but mostly for his kindness.
