Biography written for the Hibbing Historical Society for the induction of Irma Mattioli McCarthy into their Hall of Fame:

June 8, 1901 – July 28, 1993

Golden Crest Nursing Home Founder

Irma Mattioli McCarthy was born June. 8, 1901 in Sigillo, Italy, joining two older sisters. Soon after her birth, her father Domenico set out alone to America with hopes of improving the future for his growing family. A year later, her mother Margherita went to join him, leaving the girls with a grandparent. Finally, in 1913, Irma came to America, reuniting with her parents and younger siblings who had been born in America. The Mattiolis lived on Cedar Street in North Hibbing, where Mr. Mattioli was a shoemaker.

Irma worked as a clerk to help her family financially before she married and had a child, Frank Hardy. Later divorced, Irma headed to the Westside Hospital Training School for Nurses in Chicago. She earned her RN degree in 1930. In 1932, back in Hibbing, Irma married James McCarthy, whose father, an early landowner in the area, is remembered by having McCarthy Beach State Park named after him. She had another son, Robert McCarthy. Her first son Frank would serve in the Army during WWII. He then became a police officer in Seattle and was killed in the line of duty in 1954.

For several years, Irma and James operated the Motor Inn Motel on First Avenue and 25th Street in Hibbing. Seeing a need for comprehensive nursing care for the elderly, Irma and her son Robert and his wife Eleanor (Ruona) converted the motel into the Golden Crest Nursing Home in the early 1960s. It was among the first of such care facilities in the area. Irma served as the director of nursing at Golden Crest and furthered her education in order to become a licensed nursing home administrator. She was a long-time member of the American Health Care Association, American College of Nursing Home Administrators, and the American Nurses Association.

Her love for and interest in Hibbing, and especially its senior citizens, led to her active involvement with several organizations. She was a member of the First Settlers and Hibbing Historical Society, as well as the Italian American Club, the Business and Professional Women's Association, and the VFW Auxiliary 1221. She was very involved with the early efforts to save the Androy Hotel from demolition.

Irma died at the Golden Crest Nursing home, the very place she had founded and worked in to create a caring place for so many in their final years.
