William D. Adams was the son of William Adams (1845-1915) and Nancy F. Dunn (1847-1879). William & Nancy were Oregon pioneers who traveled overland by ox team in 1865. Together they raised a family of 6 boys and 2 girls in and around the beautiful Blue Mountains of Northeast Oregon. William D. was the 3rd oldest in a family of 6 boys and 2 girls.
William was 11 years old at the time of his mother's death. He left home at age 12, most likely farmed out as a general laborer to help support his family.
William, or "Bill" as he was known, had no formal education. He described his home life as "good" and his parent's relationship as "good." He had light brown hair, blue eyes and a fair complexion. He was of medium build, 5'9" tall and weighed 180 lbs.
In 1893 he married Jesse Tuleta Guirado in Umatilla, Oregon. "Leta" was of Spanish descent. Her father was full-blooded Spanish and her mother was Caucasian. Bill and Leta had 10 children together. Two died in infancy (Ethel & Leta), one died at age 6 from pneumonia (Orville) and another (Earl Randall) at age 15, when a metal chard from a wood splitting maul or wedge broke off and pierced his heart.
Their oldest child, James Franklin Adams (1899-1987), is our grandfather who is buried nearby in the Lava Hot Springs Cemetery.
In 1928, at age 50, Leta was admitted to a local hospital in Union County, Oregon, and died shortly thereafter from heart disease. A few months prior to her death, William was accused of a serious crime and was being held in the county jail at the time of her death. Even though he stated he was not guilty, he was convicted and sent to the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem, Oregon, where he died on 31 December 1937. His body was cremated and his remains went unclaimed for over 75 years.
A memorial service was held in his honor and his remains buried on 12 September 2021. A few of his descendants gathered on that day believing that a man's life should not be defined by his mistakes. Every soul is a child of God. Rest in peace dear Great-Grandfather.William "Bill" Adams cremated remains have been claimed by Adams family descendants and at some point will be buried in the Athena, Oregon cemetery next to his wife.
