Katherine Grace Freas moved on to heaven as peacefully as she lived on May 16, 2017 with her family by her side.

Katy the daughter of Mary Daugherty Cyphert and Thomas Edgar Cyphert was born January 18, 1928 in El Dorado, Ark. and raised on a farm in Fisher, Pa.

Katy was the youngest of the five Cyphert girls (Ann, Louise, Marge, Bets and our Katy) and many a wonderful story has been told about life "on the farm".

She was preceded in death in 2016 by her loving husband of 65 years, William "Bill" Freas, and sisters Ann Barth and Marge Rupert.

Always a beauty we teased her about her prettiness being an advantage in life as evidenced by this, one of many examples. In elementary school softball games Katie Grace was automatically the first batter up while other students had to draw straws to determine the batting order.

Married in 1950 she and our Dad Bill raised my brother and I in Clarion, Pa. "old school" style with family close by (on 7th Avenue) for many years.

In 1972 they relocated to Vilano Beach in St. Augustine.

Katy and Bill were faithful Catholics and parishioners at the Cathedral for many years.

Mom retired from Ripley's Museum as the gift shop manager in 1991. She forever treasured her years there and the wonderful friends she made.

What did Katy love? She loved laughing and listening, good food (luckily her son- in-law has a great restaurant) and the warm Florida sun. She loved the jitterbug, Frank Sinatra (who she saw perform three times in one day in 1945) and the Pittsburgh Steelers (especially her Bill Cowher & Dan Rooney signed football). She spoke fondly of her trip to Paris and London (her favorite vacation).

I could go on, but the thing that meant the most to her was time shared with family and friends.

In her final days, when told that all were sending prayers and when asked if she had anything to tell them she said, "Tell them I love them all".

Mom was the undercurrent of our lives; a steady no drama kind of girl; a safe landing place for encouragement and love given without question.

She was an Irish beauty with dancing blue eyes and a smile that lit up the room. XO Mom, Katy Grace forever in our hearts.

Katy leaves behind her beloved sisters Bets Summerville (Stattanville, PA) and Lousie Swartzwelder (Brookville, PA), children William E. Freas, Jr. (Linda) of Cumberland, Md., and Marta J. Freas (Ned Pollack) of St. Augustine.

She also leaves many loved and cherished grandchildren: Dr. Damean Freas (Alisa) of Annapolis, Md., Chelsea Freas Boyle (Robbie) of Ridgeley, West Virginia, Dustin Freas (Cristina) of Cumberland, Md., Jesse Boggs of Seattle, Wash., Faron Boggs (Jeanne) of Tallahassee, Fla., and Alec Pollack of St. Augustine; and great-grandchildren: Grace, Will, Scarlett, Elsa and Juliana Boggs , Aubree and Aiden Boyle, Finn, Liam and Lincoln Freas, and Mia and Elsa Freas.

The family wants to give a heartfelt thanks to Desiree Mattijsan for her loving care which made a profound difference in Mom's life. Thanks also to the wonderful staff at the Bailey Center (Community Hospice of Northeast Florida) who made things the best they could be.

In memory of Katy, plant something beautiful, say a prayer, or just smile and give a kind word.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date. Craig Funeral Home Crematory Memorial Park is in charge of the arrangements.

The Clarion-Ledger, Jackson, MS, Sun, May 28, 2017, p 10A.
