Lt Col US Air Force. He attended the the United States Military Academy, West Point, class of 1955, and served in the United States Air Force, receiving a masters degree from the University of Michigan. He joined the NASA space program in 1966 and, at the time of his passing, he was one of 24 people to have flown to the moon. He was a NASA astronaut and engineer, who served as Command Module Pilot for the Apollo 15 lunar mission in 1971. While returning from the moon he performed a space walk to retrieve film cassettes from the outside of the Apollo capsule and service module. It was the first deep space walk and is only one of three such events to have taken place during the Apollo program.
