Jan was born in Hendricks, MN on February 13, 1948, to Reuben and Rose (Hanson) Haffner. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hendricks.

Jan attended SDSU in Brookings, SD prior to moving to Sioux Falls, where she worked for the US Postal Service for 34 years. 24 of those years were spent in various management positions, where she travelled throughout the US on special projects for Postal Headquarters. She received numerous awards for her work in the Postal Service. Jan retired in 2003 at the age of 55.

Jan attended Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Sioux Falls where she was active as Choir Director, Bell-chimes director, and organist, served on numerous committees and projects. She loved to volunteer at Good Shepherd Elementary School, Great Plains Lutheran High School, and friends' day cares, and was lovingly known as "Grandma Jan". She was also a member of LaSertoma for several years and was co-chair of the National Convention for the Lutheran Women's Missionary Society, held in Sioux Falls.

Jan loved attending her grandkids' activities, often travelling great distances to do so. She liked to travel with friends and family, go south in the winters, play cards, have lunch with postal friends and Red Hatters. She was always busy.

Jan was preceded in death by her parents, Reuben and Rose Haffner, and granddaughter, Riann Nold. She is survived by her children Monique (John) Roberts, Dawn Peterson; five grandchildren, Shawn Nold, Pierce Roberts, Sydney and Ashley Peterson, all of Sioux Falls; grandson Zachary (Mackenzie) Peterson; great-granddaughter Addison of Doral, FL; brother Ronald (Ellen) Haffner of Rapid City; and many nieces and nephews.
