MARQUETTE, MI – Barbara Elaine Abbott, age 85, of Marquette, passed away Tuesday, May 10, 2022, at Eastwood Nursing Center in Negaunee.
Barb was born September 5, 1936, in Atlantic, Iowa, a daughter of Walter and Bessie (Rossell) Kunze. She very early developed a strong work ethic which served her well for the rest of her life. She was a tough, hard worker.
Following graduation from high school, Barb enrolled in business college in Omaha, Nebraska, followed by a three year course of study at Northwest Missouri State College, and finally receiving an associate degree from Northern Michigan University where she maintained a 3.50 average. Throughout the years she attended and enrolled in many computer classes and seminars.
Her career path began as an accountant with Mutual of Omaha Insurance Company in Nebraska. It was in Omaha that she met and married her husband, Patrick Abbott, Sr, in 1957. Subsequent employments included serving as executive secretary, steno-clerk, and bookkeeper in Omaha, Nebraska, and later Ishpeming. Locally she served as executive secretary and bookkeeper for Lake Superior and Ishpeming Railroad and Marquette Concrete Corporation before employment at Northern Michigan University as executive secretary in the Graduate Studies Office. From 1969 until 1995, Barb served as an executive secretary for the Department of Defense, US Air Force K.I. Sawyer.
Barb's varied interests and hobbies included swimming, boating, fishing, hunting, skating, hiking, biking, horseback riding, dancing, softball, and bowling. She was a member of the American Red Cross, National Rifle Association, and American Association of University Women.
Barb is survived by her son, Patrick (Diana) Abbott, Jr of Harvey; four grandchildren, Jared of Kent, Washington, Christine of Kent, Washington, Stephanie of Wheat Ridge, Colorado, and Justin of Marquette, Michigan; her siblings, Richard and Deloris Kunze; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Barb was preceded in death by her husband, Patrick in 2008; a son, Fred Abbott; and siblings, Rose, Robert, Roland, Raymond, Roderick, Ralph, and Ross Kunze.
Graveside services will be held at the Powell Township Cemetery in Big Bay on Friday, May 20, at 12:00 noon.
