Craig was born on September 18, 1952, in Garrison, North Dakota to Jim and Colleen (Posey) Fischer. He grew up on the family farm northwest of Garrison. His mother died in March of 1955. His father married Elaine Geiszler who helped raise him. Craig graduated from Garrison High School in 1970 and he enlisted in the US Navy from 1971-1975. He served during the Vietnam era aboard the USS Niagra Falls as a Hull Maintenance Technician.

He was united in marriage to his high school sweetheart, Phyllis Eslinger, in 1973. They had three sons together. They lived in Oakland, California while he was in the Navy. After the Navy, they returned to North Dakota where Craig worked various jobs. He had a knack for fixing about anything. Phyllis got cancer and passed away in 1998.

In 2001, Craig moved to South Dakota. He married Marilyn Abe at that time and they raised her two grandchildren together.

Craig liked spending time with his children and his grandchildren. He also liked classic cars and would spend time at his brother's auto body shop. He often checked out cars alot with his boys. The family dog, Sam, was Craig's shadow. Craig also enjoyed sharing his faith through scripture. Craig's family and friends will miss him.
