AARON, James "Jim" Richard, passed away peacefully on August 22, 2022, at his home in the Cedarfield Retirement Community in Richmond, Va., surrounded by family. His death resulted from the complications of Primary Progressive Aphasia. He was comforted throughout this long illness by his loving wife of 55 years, Connie, and his devoted family. He was born on November 16, 1938 in Birmingham, Ala., to James Wesley Aaron and Ethel Nolan Aaron.

A great storyteller, he later entertained his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews with stories of his adventurous childhood in Birmingham and in Lineville, Ala. After a period at Birmingham Southern College, Jim joined the United States Marine Corps, becoming a member of the Color Guard and was stationed at the historic Marine Corps Barracks in Washington, D.C. In 1961, he was honored to carry the Presidential Flag during President John F. Kennedy's inauguration.

Following his military service, he began a long, illustrious career in the insurance and financial services industry. Beginning his career with Investors Diversified Services (IDS) he quickly became an agent in the top 1% of their field force. He was then appointed Divisional Manager in Richmond, Va., followed by Divisional Manager in Los Angeles, Calif. In 1979, he moved to Connecticut Mutual Life (CML), where he became the Brokerage Director in Baltimore, Md., and then returned to Richmond to become a General Agent. From 1985 to 1989, he served in the Connecticut Mutual home office in Hartford, Conn., as a Vice President of Agency Development, and in 1989, he returned to the field becoming the General Agent in Philadelphia.

Following his retirement from Connecticut Mutual in 1996, he returned to Richmond and opened an insurance brokerage firm, Aaron Advantage Agency, a member of the IMO, Advantage Insurance Network, headquartered in Los Angeles, Calif. Jim was a Chartered Financial Consultant (ChFC) and a Chartered Life Underwriter (CLU). He was also a Registered Representative and held Series 1, 6, 24, 26 and 63 licenses. He taught CLU courses at the American College in Bryn Mawr during his time in Philadelphia. During his career, he received multiple awards with IDS and CML. While in Hartford, he completed the Tuck School of Business Executive Development Program at Dartmouth College. He served on several industry boards and was especially active in the Association of Life Underwriters and was a speaker at industry functions. An active Rotarian, he was named the Rotarian of the year by the Philadelphia Rotary Club for organizing and executing a highly successful cable TV auction.

Jim loved participating in his children's activities, coaching softball, baseball and soccer teams. He was also the President of the PTA in Severna Park, Md. An exercise enthusiast, he completed the Richmond Marathon as well as several half marathons. He loved cycling, especially in the Santa Ynez Canyon in Pacific Palisades, Calif., and more recently through First Landing State Park in Virginia Beach.

Jim was predeceased by his parents; his nephew, Jeffrey Curtin Houston a much-loved cousin, Clara Camp Horton; and by his beloved daughter, Amy Aaron Howle. He is survived by his devoted wife, Cornelia Curtin Aaron (Connie); and his children, Lesley Aaron, Tracy Aaron and her son, Julian DiCarlantonio, Elizabeth Hunt and her husband, David and their sons, Sean and Stephen and James Aaron Jr. and his wife, Jennifer and their children, Jackson and Carrington. He is also survived by his daughter, Amy Howle's children, Hannah, Sophie, Holden and Catherine and by their father, Martin Howle and his wife, Tina.

The family is grateful to the staff at Cedarfield for the care and comfort they provided during Jim's long illness. We are especially thankful for Dr. Gregory Cook, who became so important to Jim during his difficult illness. His Hospice nurse Nicole Britt of Heartland Hospice was wonderful in the last year of his life. The last four years were so much more comfortable and bearable because of the friendship and companionship that Charles Patterson provided while caring for Jim.

A private family service will take place in October 2022 at St. Mary's Catholic Church; and it will be followed by interment with military honors in Greenwood Memorial Gardens. Donations may be made to St. Mary's Catholic Church at 9505 Gayton Road, Richmond, Va. 23229.
