Hon. J. D. Adams suffered a stroke while in Bartels barber shop in Telluride. He was taken to the Telluride hospital where he died at 9:30 a.m. on July 5, 1924. He moved with his family to Rico in the early 1890s. He served a term as representative from Rico and remained active in politics, though he never held another office. He had a mercantile business in Rico and served as postmaster. About 1909, J.D. and Martha moved to Durango, where he worked in real estate. In 1914, the couple settled on their ranch in Arriola, Montezuma County. Their younger son was tragically killed by the family's pet horse in 1902. Martha E. Adams died about 1921 and was buried in Rico by her son. Their older son, E. B. Adams, was an attorney in Telluride for many years before relocating to Grand Junction shortly before the death of his father. J. D. was buried by his wife and son in a Masonic funeral on July 8, 1924. There are no markers for J.D. and Martha Adams.
