Walter was the son of John Mayberry Abbott and Elzira Clementine Ruble, and was the oldest of their 12 children. His birth info above and his middle name are from the 1867 Craig Co., VA birth register, but his DOB is May 1867 in his 1900 census, and Fridley's book has 11/28/1867 as the date. Many of his records are under the given name "W. J.", and he worked as a Jeweler and/or Watch Maker for much of his life.

He first married Laura McCowen in 1891 in Tazewell Co., VA, and was divorced when he married in 1898 to Margaret Elizabeth "Maggie" O'Bryan in Craig Co., VA. By Maggie, he had two sons: Carl Vincent and Arden Claude; Carl was listed as "W. J. Jr." in the 1900 census, but his name had changed by the 1910 census. Walter & Maggie divorced, and she appears to have never remarried.

In 1908, Walter married Edna Blanche Gerow in Pocahontas Co., WV, which is where they lived in the 1910-1930 censuses. They had two daughters: Kathleen Frances (married Wallace Edward Bird) and Camille Ann (married Esco Carl Johnson, Jr. in 1940; Edward Stephen Bures in 1949; and Harland R. Salls in 1964).
