Funeral services for Jerry Abernathy, 99, of Groton will be at Paetznick-Garness Funeral Chapel, Groton, Tuesday, December 27th, 3pm (visitation one hour preceding). Rev. Terry Kenny will officiate. Military honors will be provided by Groton American Legion Post #39. Inurnment will follow in the spring in Union Cemetery, Groton.

Mark Jerrold Abernathy was born on November 19, 1923 in Buffalo County, South Dakota to Franklin Mark and Mildred Marie (Schenegge) Abernathy. He grew up in Buffalo Co and later graduated HS from South Dakota State School of Agriculture. Jerry worked the family ranch and served nine years in the United States Marine Corps during the late 1940s -1950s. Jerry united in marriage with Elizabeth Messmer on December 21, 1961. After graduating from South Dakota State College with a degree in civil engineering in 1963, he was recruited to work in the Los Angeles County Road Department. The family lived in Palmdale, CA until his retirement in 1982, when they moved to Custer, SD. Jerry, Elizabeth and three daughters moved to Groton in 1986 and he was employed with the Bureau of Indian Affairs in Aberdeen, as a civil engineer.

Jerry was a member of the American Legion Abernathy Post 16, Gann Valley, SD and the First Presbyterian Church of Groton. Throughout his lifetime, Jerry was always a horseman. While living in Palmdale, CA the family had a hobby farm that included horses and other farm animals. During his lifetime, Jerry broke many horses and was an excellent teamster.

Celebrating his life is his wife of 61 years, Elizabeth, children, Dean (Beth) Abernathy of Costa Mesa, California, Julie (Dave) Monday of Chester, California, Alicia (Loren) Helmer of Andover, Cindy (Terry) Leonhardt of Groton, Kristie (Bob) Gibbs of Groton, grandchildren: Mark Ian (Annie), Austin Abernathy, Justin (Megan) Maytum, Jessica (Brian) Duval, Emily, Ethan, Chloe, Ryan (USMC), and Levi Monday, Josey (Josh) Heupel, Riley, and Kate Helmer, Cheyenne (Cameron) Goodrich, Taylor (Adam) Krause, Tyra (Jarid) Bechen, Mark Leonhardt and fiancé Kayla Harrison. Jerry is also survived by eight great-grandchildren, Aurora, Simon, Mara, Luke, Abigail, Caleb, Hayes and Kinley and two brothers, Larry (Arlys) Abernathy of Chamberlain and Mike Abernathy of Pierre. He is known for his devotion to his five children, sixteen grandchildren and eight greatgrandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his parents Mark and Mildred and his siblings, Mile, Marie, Bill, Grace, Mildred, Twila, Rita and Louis.

Honorary Casketbearers will be his grandsons: Justin, Ian, Austin, Riley, Ethan, Mark, Ryan and Levi.

Donations in memory of Jerry may be directed to The Pantry food bank in Groton, or to the Groton First Presbyterian Church.
