Former longtime Anchorage resident Ralph Lee Abbott, 70, a retired flight inspector, died Feb. 21 of a heart attack in Ojai, Calif. A military graveside service and burial was held at Ivy Lawn Cemetery in Ventura, Calif. Pallbearers were Harold Abbott, Chuck Abbott, Zachary Abbott, Mark Watson, Ralph Watson, Dan Watson, Darrell Johnston, Forrest Johnston and Reuben Johnston.

Mr. Abbott was born Aug. 6, 1921, in Omaha, Neb. He graduated with honors from high school. He immediately joined the U.S. Marines and attended four years of school. He earned an aviation master mechanic degree and a private pilot's license. He served in the Marines, First Air Division, from 1939 to 1942. Mr. Abbott came to Alaska in 1959 and worked for Cordova Airlines. He later worked for Wein Airlines and retired as their flight inspector in 1984. He then moved to Carson City, Nev., with his wife. According to his family, Mr. Abbott enjoyed square-dancing, was a rockhound, prospector, pilot and great father. "He was a people person, friendly with everybody, and always ready to lend a helping hand. He was a very caring father, had great patience and had fun square-dancing," his family said.

Mr. Abbott is survived by his wife, Cora Fowler Abbott of Carson City; his daughters, Ida Johnston of Anchorage, Marie Carter of Deming, Wash., Linda White of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; his son, Chuck of Wasilla; his brother, Harold of Carson City; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Arrangements were by Reardon Mortuary in Ventura.
