Henry "Hank" Aaby
July 12, 1932 - May 17, 2023

U.S. Veteran
Henry Alfred Aaby Jr., of Twin Valley, MN., died May 17, 2023, (Norwegian Independence Day), at Viking Manor Nursing Home, Ulen, MN., under the care of hospice, with family at his side.

Henry was born July 12, 1932, in Twin Valley, MN., to Mildred and Henry Aaby Sr. He was raised on a farm near the Wild Rice River, with his siblings: Phyllis and Mark. He was lovingly called "Hank and Junior" by friends and family. He attended country school in a one room schoolhouse. Henry loved to tell his children stories about the treacherous walk thru snow and over hills. He graduated from Twin Valley High School in 1949.

Henry enlisted in the United States Army in December of 1954, and served his country during the Korean War. His military service followed in the footsteps of his father and grandfather, and following him, is his son and grandson, having also served their country. He was stationed in Germany, which began his love of travel for years to come.

After his return, he met the lady who stole his heart, Dorothy Lundon. Dorothy worked at the local Ada drug store and was "the prescription for him," he said. The couple were married May 16, 1959. They lived on a farm southwest of Twin Valley, and raised four children: Cindy, Tom, Chris, and Jeremy.

Farming was Henry's main occupation, but he was also a Cargill Seeds Dealer, and a Norman County Commissioner for 20+ years. While serving as Commissioner, he served on many committees/boards, including the one that helped form the Lake Agassiz Trail. He found these occupations rewarding and established friendships that lasted a lifetime.

He was a proud member of the Nesseth-Lien Post 431, he regularly marched with the honor guard for Memorial Day, local parades, and funerals. He advocated for memorial stones for deceased veterans in the county who did not have one. Henry was also a member of the TV Lions Club, Zion Lutheran Church, Norman County Historical Society, DFL, and others.

Henry's love of history created quite a collection of antiques over the years. He could be found at many auction sales looking for his treasures. Researching his family heritage was also a great passion, especially as he boasted about being 100% Norwegian. He enjoyed many reunions with classmates, army buddies, and of course, family.

Henry had great enthusiasm for traveling. The family went on numerous adventures to many states. Later, he extended his travel abroad to his ancestral farm in Norway, and to Ireland, which was Dorothy's heritage. He also journeyed to England numerous times to visit the Gidlow family, which had become very special family friends. One of his favorite local spots to relax was Tulaby Lake, with family and friends. (Always wanting to catch the big one and teaching his grandchildren to also.)

Upon retirement, Henry and Dorothy, moved into Twin Valley. Henry later dealt with disabilities of sight and hearing, but was proud to say he remained independent, even with the passing of his wife, Dorothy, in 2015. In his last years, Henry established many special friendships that he greatly treasured. Recently, he joined The Normandy Apartments residents and acquired many new friends there, as well. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, and we know that he is dancing a polka with Dorothy, in heaven.

Henry is survived by his daughter, Cindy (Dan) Johnson; three sons: Tom (Maureen), Chris (Juanita), and Jeremy (Cheryl); seven grandchildren: Chase, Samantha (Ryan), Cody, Jaden, Corey(Madison), Lundon, and Stella; one great grandchild, Eleanor; one sister, Phyllis (Clayton) Skaurud; one brother: Mark (Gail); in-laws: Phyllis Drake, Betty Lundon, Ron & Ellen Holtman, Mark & Joan Chisholm; and many nieces; nephews; and cousins.

Henry is preceded in death by his wife; parents; and twin infant siblings.

Funeral Services will be held Friday, June 2, 2023, at 2:00 pm, with visitation one hour prior, at the Zion Lutheran Church, in Twin Valley. Interment will be at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, in Twin Valley.
