John was born and raised in Aberdeen South Dakota. He attended Northern State University, and served in the US Army.
John and Marlys were married in 1959. They spent many happy years raising two daughters in St Louis Park, Minnesota. John worked for the US Postal Service for 33 years. He enjoyed spending time listening to music, reading, and watching baseball.
Survived by brother Robert Mathews, daughters Lori (Joel) Baird, Julie (Scott) Lind, grandchildren Shannon (Scott) Billodeau, Jonathan (Kelsie) Baird, Heather Baird, Bradley (Kaitlyn) Lind, Kathryn Lind, and many nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his wife Marlys, brothers William and Allan Mathews, and parents Henry and Esther Mathews.
