"Tuesday, October 26, 1897
At 10 o'clock p.m. today Mr. J. E. Abell departed this life. Aged over 80 years, his exact age not known to me. He had been a resident of Winnsboro and the vicinity thereof something over 52 years. It is said he was never confined to his bed, as much as two days at one time, from sickness of any kind during his whole. He had a remarkable good constitution. For the last year he has been failing physically and his life finally went, as though the physical machinery was worn out and no longer able to contain it. Did not appear to have any disease more than a breaking down under the weight of years."
