United States Army General, United States Government Official. He served as the 32nd Chief of Staff of the United States Army from 1991 to 1995. He served as the Acting Secretary of the United States Army during the Administration of President Bill Clinton (1993). Raised in Quincy, Massachusetts, he was commissioned a second lieutenant of Armor and attained his Bachelor of Arts degree from Norwich University. He saw combat in Vietnam, Europe and Korea and during the course of his career, he earned a Purple Heart, Bronze Star and Defense Distinguished Service Medal.
