Taken from the book Diggin' Up Bones by Betty Barnes:
Frank Munzo Aguilera, 19, of Deerfield was killed Tuesday night September 16, 1953, when his car plunged into an irrigation ditch just north of Holcomb.
Aguilera's 1946 Ford was found submerged in an irrigation ditch about three miles west of holcomb. His body was in the front seat of the car.
The car, which apparently was traveling at a high rate of speed, missed a bridge, traveled 71 feet across the ditch and careened into the water, landing on its top.
Emanuel Schiffelbein, of Holcomb, discovered the tragedy shortly before eight o'clock Wednesday morning, when he saw the car's wheels in the water. He called a truck and men from the Northern Natural Gas station and they were able to right the car. The men found Aguilera's body sprawled in the front seat.
Trooper Jim Thornton and Undersheriff Dean Emberton said it is not known whether the boy was killed by the impact or whether he drowned. A doctor said Aguilera had been dead for some time before he was found. The boy was wearing a waterproof watch and it was still running.
Cause of the accident is unknown, but Thornton said indications are Aguilera went to sleep at the wheel. He had spent most of the evening in Garden City attending the fiesta.
Frank Aguilera was born March 9, 1934, in Deerfield, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Merced Aguilera, and attended the Deerfield schools.
He is survived by his parents and a sister, Doris, of the home; three brothers, Jessie Aguilera, of Garden City, A. M. Rodriguez, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, and John Rodriguez of Hutchinson. Another sister, Mrs. Leonard Alcarez, lives in Garden City.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.
