JACK STUART AARDEMA

Jack Stuart Aardema died unexpectedly on Monday, August 22, 2011. Born in Holland, Michigan on November 18, 1942, the son of the late Joe Aardema and Tracey Deborah Aardema, Jack grew up near Lake Macatawa in the Waukazoo Woods area.

Finishing Holland High School in 1961, Jack graduated Kendall School of Design (now Ferris State University) in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Jack is survived by his beloved wife, Maggie Fonvielle Aardema of Wrightsville Beach. Others of the family are his daughter Cynthia Aardema Guzman and husband Peter Guzman and their children Carly Rae Guzman and Camden John Guzman, all of Holland, Michigan; his brothers, Thomas Allen Aardema and his wife, Judy and Robert John Aardema and his wife Dr. Bonnie Aardema, all of Kalamazoo, Michigan.

In addition to Jack's many nieces, nephews, and cousins, he is survived by his extended Fonvielle family, numerous friends and his constant companion Beaufort, Labrador retriever.

Jack's career in the furniture industry included designing manufacturers' furniture showrooms and retail store displays for companies such as Kroehler, Schwieger and Berkline.

Jack and Maggie moved to Wrightsville Beach in 1981 to continue Design Associates Interior Design Consultants, Inc. While serving as president, Jack opened his dream retirement shop, Harbor Island Ship Models which focused on collecting antique ship models and nautical accessories.

His passion for boats and time spent near the water on Lake Michigan, Banks Channel and the Atlantic Ocean were his joy.

Despite the onset of his rare autoimmune vascular illness (polyarteritis nodosa), Jack embraced acrylic and watercolor painting in his studios in Wrightsville Beach and Saugatuck, Michigan. He rarely missed an opportunity to exhibit his work, the latest being the Wilmington Art Association Azalea Show in April 2011.

On Friday, September 2, after a private ceremony, the family will scatter Jack's ashes at sea from his yacht "Darling". Family and friends are invited to the home at 6 Shore Drive, Wrightsville Beach from noon to 2 o'clock to celebrate Jack's life.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: New Hanover Humane Society, 2405 N 23rd Street, Wilmington, NC, 910-763-6692; or North Carolina Coastal Land Trust, 131 Racine Drive, Suite 101, Wilmington, NC 28403, 910-790-4524; or The Land Conservancy of West Michigan, 1345 Monroe Avenue NW, suite 324, Grand Rapids, MI 49505, 616-451-9476.
