Mrs. Allie Abbott, 96, a pioneer of the Hanston community passed away Monday morning, April 15, at the Hodgeman County hospital after an illness of ten days.
Sarah Alice Salmans, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Levi F. Salmans, was born October 8, 1866 at Hamden, Ohio. She was the oldest of ten children. She came to Kingman County, Kansas in 1885 with her parents where they spent the summer and in the fall of 1885, they came to Hodgeman County. She spent the rest of her life here with the exception of several years when she lived in Larned. For the past two years she as lived in the Saritan Rest Home in Jetmore.
She was married to Joseph William Abbott October 7, 1900. They lived on a farm six miles east of Jetmore until three years before his death when they moved to a home in Hanston. Mr. Abbott's death was January 30, 1919. Mrs. Abbott lived in Hanston until she moved to Larned, and later to Jetmore.
Mrs. Abbott retained her mental faculties until the end and was able to be up and around ruing the day until her last illness. She had a good memory and enjoyed visiting her friends and relatives.
Survivors include two sisters, Mrs. E.A. Arnold (Ella) of Larned and Mrs. Fred T. Foreman (Nona) of Hanston; three brothers, Homer F. Salmals, Dodge City, Tom B. Salmans, Belpre and Charles A. Salmans of Garden City, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her two brothers John and George Salmans and two sisters.
Funeral services were April 17, at 10:30 a.m. at the Hanston Methodist Church where she had been a member for many years. Rev. S.E. Warren and Rev. G.H. Wertz officiated and burial was beside her husband in the Hanston Cemetery. The Davis Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
