FALL OF SLATE CAUSES DEATH

Charles Harkless Crushed When Room Caves In on Him While at Work

FELLOW EMPLOYE ESCAPES FATALITY

Miners at Bidwell Victims of Accident; Relatives Reside in Ottumwa

Clarence E. Harkless, 40 years old, employed in the Bidwell mines, was instantly killed Tuesday afternoon at 3:40 o’clock by fall of slate. Frank Williams, another employe of this mine, working with Mr. Harkless, was about to enter the room when the fall occurred and was slightly injured. The slate fell without warning, pinning Harkless to the floor. He was removed in a few minutes but life was extinct.

The deceased resided about two and one-half miles west of Bidwell, and is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Harkless of Ottumwa, his wife and three children at home, one son, Montella, and two daughters, Freda and Ustina, also one sister, Mrs. Bertha Dale of near Bidwell, and four brothers, Emmett, Fred E., E.G., and Earl Harkless, all of Ottumwa.

The funeral services will be held from his residence Thursday afternoon at 1 o’clock and at 3 o’clock from the Pleasant Home church, conducted by Rev. C.A. Field. Interment will take place in Brook scemetery [sic]. The U.M.W. of A., Local No. 3039 of Bidwell, will have charge of the services at the grave.
