Reuben was born in Yorkshire, England. He departed England on board the American ship "Chaos" and immigrated at New Orleans, Louisiana 14-Jan-1842 with his father, step-mother and two brothers. He settled on an 80-acre farm at Eight Mile Precinct in Carterville Township. He enlisted 18-Jun-1861 during the Civil War as a Private in Co K, 18th Illinois US Infantry. While on furlough from military duty, an unknown assailant shot him in the stomach at his front door.
