Following high school, he joined the United States Army in January 1968, rising to the rank of Corporal. He was a mortarman in Viet Nam. On 5 May 1968, he along with other soldiers was being air lifted out of an intense battle in the area of Tam Ky. Their helicopter was blown out of the sky. His body was recovered among the remains of other soldiers. His dog tags were never found. As best as could be done, their remains were separated and buried at Jefferson Barracks, St. Louis, MO. This location was chosen as it would be most central to the Home of Record for Duane and his fellow soldiers.
Duane was awarded various medals to include the Bronze Star and Purple Heart. Each year at Memorial Day the plaque at his mother’s home, Darlene Brule Normandin, is moved to the grounds of Saint Peter’s cemetery in Gentilly, Minnesota where the Crookston Legion color guard honors Duane with suitable ceremonies.
Duane is survived by his mother, Darlene, five sisters and one brother. Duane preceded his father in death. Raymond “Fritz” Normandin passed from this life on 17 May, 1992.
