Born Carl William Abbot, he was the first born child of Mary Dillon and Ralph Abbott. When young his parents moved their family to a farm two miles south of Oswego where they lived for a few years eventually settling in Oakley. He graduated from Oakley High School and attended a business college in Salina. In 1920 he returned to Oswego but moved on the Kansas City where he worked as a printer. He eventually returned to Oswego and worked for the Oswego Democrat newspaper as a printer until he retired in the 1960s.

He married Irene Lois Barcus on July 14, 1923 in Columbus. He was survived by his wife; two daughters; a brother; a sister; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He worshiped at the First Baptist Church in Oswego where he was a member. He was also active with Meals on Wheels.
