Born Oct. 4, 1924, at Searles, TN, son of the late Oscar Laverlie and Georgia Caroline Baker Abernathy, he was a farmer.
On Dec. 11, 1945, in New Madrid, he married Frances Elizabeth Bishop who survives of the home.
Other survivors include: one son and daughter-in-law, Harvey and Claudia Abernathy; one daughter and son-in-law, Caroline and Ronald Bright; two brothers, Marcus Abernathy and Lee Abernathy; six grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and one sister.
Visitation was at Blanchard Funeral Chapel in Sikeston where services were scheduled, with the Rev. Melton Morton of East Prairie officiating.
Burial followed in Dogwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers were: Jason Bright, Jimmy Fowler, Bill Baldwin, Wayne Rollins, John Abernathy and Lee Abernathy.
