2nd husband Ralph C. Tangley

From Karen:

ATHOL - On Thursday, May 25, 2006, our family lost our most beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Barbara Louise (Abare) (Douglas) Tangley.

She was born on Dec. 4, 1922 and raised in Athol, the daughter of Louis and Julia (Hains) Abare. She graduated from Athol High School in 1940. Barbara worked at Liggett's Drug Store in Athol part-time while her children went to school and later at Bruce's Pharmacy in Athol.

Barbara loved her family and friends first and foremost. She enjoyed snow-skiing and numerous camping trips in the past. She was quite an accomplished golfer and curler and has a house full of trophies to show for it. She and husband Ralph were both members of the Petersham Curling Club and the Petersham Country Club, to which Ralph is still a member. She and Ralph also belonged to the Orange Seniors Club.

She loved her plants and flowers, cooking and baking, reading novels, crossword and jigsaw puzzles, and was an avid card/whist player. She also enjoyed traveling the country and to Bermuda with her husband, Ralph, the Maine seacoast, knitting, and discovering new birds at the feeder outside her kitchen window.

Barbara leaves her loving husband, Ralph C. Tangley of Athol. She also leaves her daughter, Linda (Douglas) Lozier and her husband, Gerard Lozier, of Athol, her son Ralph W. Douglas Jr. and his wife, Linda (Cullen) Douglas, of Nevada, as well as brother-in-law Ed Burnham of Athol and sister-in-law Elizabeth Robertson of Florida.

Her grandchildren are Christine D. (Lozier) Lozier-Duprey and husband, Todd D. Duprey, of Athol, Jennifer Lozier of Athol, Curtis Condike and his wife, Cheryl, of Petersham, Patrick Harrington and his wife, Jennifer of Washington State, and Meredith Young and family.

Great-grandchildren are Etienne "Buster" Lozier and his sister Montana "Tana" Louise Duprey of Athol, Ava Grace Condike of Petersham, Summer Elizabeth Harrington of Washington and Emily Rose Young. She also leaves many adored nieces and nephews.

She was pre-deceased by her first husband, Ralph W. Douglas Sr., in 1970. She was also pre-deceased by her two brothers, Kenneth and Robert Abare, and two sisters, Joyce (Abare) Burnham and Iona (Abare) Farrell. Barbara also had a third brother who passed away during infancy.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, May 31, at 11 a.m. in the Our Lady Immaculate Church, 192 School St. Burial will be in Gethsemane Cemetery at a later date at the convenience of the family.

Calling hours will be held Tuesday, May 30, from 5 to 7:30 p.m. in the J. Edward Murphy Funeral Home, 137 Main St.
