Joel Adler was born in Tarboro, NC and resided in Destin, Florida for most of his adult life. He graduated from Tarboro High School in NC and then joined the US Air Force. He devoted his life to public service.

He was a member of the Destin Volunteer Fire Department, a board member of the Fire District Association, former board member of Destin Water Users, captain of Destin Search and Recovery Team, a Red Cross instructor in first aid and CPR, and a deputy sheriff with the Okaloosa County Sheriff's Department.

Joel was an avid underwater photographer and took photos for public agencies as well as for his own enjoyment.

Joel had two children, Mikel and Joanne. His parents, Harry and Doris Adler, predeceased him. He has one sister living in NC.
