After graduating from Dickinson Central High School in 1944, Jean joined the Cadet Nurse Corps as a volunteer in WW II and took her RN training at the Bismarck Evangelical Hospital School of Nursing. Upon graduation in 1947, she enlisted in the Navy as an ensign and served in the Nurse Corps at Great Lakes Naval Hospital during the Korean War.
