OBITUARY:
Captain Donald B. Ramage, USN (Ret.) passed away on Wednesday, Aug. 15, at an Oceanside hospital. Captain Ramage was born in Massachusetts in 1915. He was raised in northern New York and Vermont. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1938. He spent the next six years at sea on destroyers and aircraft carriers. During World War II he served in destroyers in the Aleutian Islands, South Pacific and Atlantic and commanded the USS Harding (DD 625).
Captain Ramage spent tours at the Naval War College, Destroyer Force Atlantic Staff, Armed Forces Staff College and a tour in Washington with the Navy Research and Development Board. In 1952 he served in the Korean Theater of Operations on the USS St. Paul (CA 73) as Operations Officer, followed by a tour as Commanding Officer of the USS Blue (DD 744).
In 1955 he served in the Office of the Chief of Naval Operations as Head of the Navy Strategic Plans Branch. In August 1958 he was assigned as Assistant, then Head of the Navy Branch, Military Assistance Division, Headquarters U.S. European Command located in St. Germain-El-Laye, France.
From 1962 to 1963 he commanded the USS Tulare (LKA 112), a combat cargo ship, in the Pacific, followed by command of Amphibious Squadron 8 in the Atlantic.
From 1964 to 1966 he served as Chief of Staff, Alaskan Sea Frontier, based in Kodiak, Alaska. Then he took command of the Reserve Fleet Group, Bremerton, Washington, retiring in 1968. Captain Ramage served 31 years in the U.S. Navy and received the Silver Star, three Bronze Stars and numerous area and campaign awards. Captain Ramage lived in Bellevue, Wash., until 1973, when he moved to Oceanside.
Captain Ramage is survived by his wife of 47 years, Helen; his daughter, DeeDee Porter; his son, Commander Donald B. Ramage, Jr., USN; his brother, J.J. Ramage of Rome, N.Y.; and two grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held on Friday, Aug. 24, at 11 a.m. at the North Chapel at the Naval Training Center in San Diego. In lieu of flowers, donations to the American Cancer Society would be appreciated. (Blade-Citizen, Sunday, August 19, 1990, page B-2)
