Abbott died in the Civil War, Margaret married Archibald Gordon in 1868. Margaret then had an additional four children by the name of Gordon: Martha, Becky, Emma, and Edward. Both of Margaret's husbands predeceased her, having her widowed for the second time by the 1880 census. At the time of her death in 1903, Margaret was living in Manhattan, Kansas, and she was laid to rest in Sunset Cemetery, next to the spot where her son, William Thomas "Tom" Abbott (1856-1922), is now buried.
