Leonard was the son of Leonard and Gincy Abney. Known siblings were Elizabeth, Frank, and Gincy. Leonard Jr. enlisted as a private in the Civil War August 15, 1862. He married Emeline Perry September 16, 1862 in Adams County, Illinois. On October 7, 1862 Leonard enlisted in Company G, Illinois 119th Infantry Regiment. He mustered out December 5, 1862 due to a disablity discharge. Known children born to Leonard and Emeline were Diton, Hattie, and Claude. Leonard married Lou Caffey March 2, 1880 in Saline County, Missouri.
