W. Vernon Abbott, 88, of Greencastle passed away Sunday, May 17, 2009 at the Millpond Health Campus.
Born Sept. 29, 1920 in Eubank, Ky., he was the son of James Milton and Jettie (Reece) Abbott. He married Lillian E. (Albright) Abbott and she preceded him in death on Jan. 23, 2003.

Mr. Abbott was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army Air Corp.

Mr. Abbott had owned and operated the Vernon Abbott Realty. He was a member of the Church of the Nazarene.

Survivors include his children, James Abbott and wife, Dr. Kay of Terre Haute, Sharon Hinkle and husband, Wallace of Greencastle, and Barbara Handy and husband, Dr. Ken of Kankakee, Ill.; a brother, Lester Abbott of Deerfield Beach, Fla.; sister-in-law, Esther Abbott of Missouri; three aunts, Bessie Osborne of Orlando, Fla., Iva Reece of Somerset, Ky. and Lois Abbott of Merced, Calif.; two grandchildren, C.W. Hinkle and wife, Nikki of Austin, Texas and Shannon Green and husband, John of Avon; three great-grandchildren, Isabella Green, Evalyn Green, and Lillian Green; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; three brothers, Willard Abbott, Smith Abbott, infant brother John Phillip Abbott; sister and brother-in-law, Norma and George Jackman.

Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the Church of the Nazarene, 580 South County Road 100 East, Greencastle, with the Revs. Robert Munce, Steve Blaydes, and Kelzo "Buck" Martin officiating.

Burial with military honors will be in the Brick Chapel Cemetery.
