DANIEL ETHERIDGE ABEL.
Daniel E. Abel died at his home in Arcadia on Wednesday morning, May 27. Mr. Abel has lived in this city for years and was a well-known figure to all who are familiar with our city. He has lived to a good old age, being over ninety-years old, and of late has been very feeble, but up until last year, he has been very active and well-preserved old gentleman. He was born in New York and for years followed the turner's trade. He came to Nebraska more than thirty years ago and for fifteen years has lived in this section of the country.

(NOTE: The Abels emigrated via covered wagon with several families; Daniel homesteaded 160-Acres in Sect. 32, twp.17, range 16; recorded Vol. 17, page 23; US Land Office Tract Bk, Vo. 116. Eventually, he removed from his soddy on the Plains to a FRAME HOUSE in Arcadia.)

Besides the aged wife, Mr. Abel leaves two children, a son who is now here (i.e.; Jerome Clark Abel), and Mrs. Ruckman (i.e.; Luella Almyra Abel Minshall-Ruckman), both of whom live in Illinois. (Say, WHAT? This seems to be an error.) Funeral services were held in the M.E. Church at this place yesterday, conducted by Rev. Shank. (i.e.: Methodist Episcopal) The old gentleman was laid to rest in our cemetery.

NOTE #1: This obituary is in possession of the Nebraska State Historical Society, per James C. Olson, Superintendent, Nebraska State Historical Society, November 2, 1953. Subscribed, sworn, and notarized by Clare B. Messinger, November 2, 1953. Copy certified as exact by notary Boyd Beggs, April 1, 1954. (Commission expires Jan. 25, 1959)

NOTE #2: Daniel and Electa Abel became members of the Methodist Church in Arcadia on September 16, 1889. Per family records, Daniel was a "STRICT" Methodist. "There is a note in the church records (as of September 18, 2012, found by Arcadia researcher Linda Currie) that Daniel died on May 27, 1903. Electa removed her membership from that church about five days later on June 1, 1903. No other notations are made in the church records." Ms. Currie states that to no avail, she searched 21 area cemeteries for our great granddad. Daniel's grave, perhaps not permanently marked at the time, may today be unmarked. hb)
