Charles Robert Abel, 79, of St. Augustine, died May 17, 2005, at his home. Mr. Able was a native of Mulberry, Ark., and had resided in St. Augustine since 1980.
He was a retired U.S. Air Force fighter pilot and served during World War II, in Korea and Vietnam.

Survivors: His son, Robert Mertz; sister, Eva Schidler; brother, Clayton Abel; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren and other cousins, nieces and nephews.
