Ernest James Ables, 67, Topeka, died Thursday, May 13, 1999, at a Topeka hospital.

Mr. Ables worked for 25 years at the Topeka State Hospital as a boiler fireman. He also owned and operated Ables Wrecking and was a self-employed over-the-road truck driver.

He was born Dec. 12, 1931, in Topeka, the son of Earnest E. and Fleta L. Stackhouse Ables. He lived in Topeka all his life. Mr. Ables was a member of the Owner Operator Independent Drivers Association and a former member of Meriden Lodge No. 236O AF&AM.

He married Gwendolyn I. Roth on Sept. 22, 1951, at Topeka. She survives, of the home.

Survivors also include a daughter, Susan Ables Ross, Allen, Texas; four sons, Earnest E. Ables Sr., Princeton, Texas, Larry D. Ables, Cedar Hill, Texas, Jim L. Ables, Plano, Texas, and Gary D. Ables, Topeka; a grandson he and his wife raised from an infant and were legal guardian of, Earnest E. Ables Jr., Topeka; his mother, Fleta L. Ables, Topeka; three brothers, Elmer L. Ables, Eugene O. Ables and Emmett L. Ables, all of Topeka; nine grandchildren; and one great- granddaughter.

Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Parker-Price Mortuary.

Burial will be in Prairie Home Cemetery.

Mr. Ables will lie in state after 11 a.m. Sunday at the Parker-Price Mortuary, where the family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
