Charles was born in what was then Wakonda, Dakota Territory. His father died in 1887 when he was 3 years old. Charles was orphaned at the age of 13 upon the death of his mother.

Charles joined his two older brothers John 'Edward' and George W. in migrating to the high plains of eastern Colorado. Charles and George each filed claims on one hundred sixty acre homesteads in Logan County.

In Sterling, Logan Co., Colorado, Charles married Hazel Gertrude Bryant on February 23, 1914. They were blessed with three children: Lola Maxine, Shirley 'Bernice' and Charles Jr.
