Sept 18, 1905 - Muscatine Journal - Columbus Junction, Sept. 18 — Mrs. A.J. Duncan, who has been suffering from a stroke of paralysis since Wednesday of last veek quietly passed away near the close of the day yesterday. During the first few hours after suffering the stroke Grandmother Duncan, as she was familiarly called, suffered a great deal and since that time had lay for the greater part of the time quietly sleeping and in that manner passed from this life to that brighter and better world.
She is survived by three children, Mrs. K.R. Robertson, of this place; Wm. A. Duncan, east of Columbus City, and Mrs. T. Lee Duncan, with whom she has made her home since the death of her husband, the late A.J. Duncan, six years ago; all were present at the time of her death. Beside these she leaves one sister, Mrs. Esther Duncan, of Allerton, who was also with her, 18 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, and many other relatives and friends. She will be greatly missed in the community in which she has lived so long.
Nancy Jane Johnston was born in Blourt county, Tennessee, March 26, 1821. She grew to womanhood and was married to Andrew Jackson Duncan in their native state in 1847. They came to Iowa, coming the greater part of the way by boat, and settled on a farm in the Tennesse neighborhood. Six months later they purchased the farm in the same neighborhood where they lived until Mr. Duncan's death.
The funeral will be held from the home of her daughter, Mrs. T. Lee Duncan, at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Conducted by Rev. Mr. Masson, of Washington. Burial in the cemetery west of town.
