WILLIAM A. HEROLD, who for many years, or until his recent death on Friday, May 31, 1918, was proprietor of a good dairy and stock farm in section 16, Belvidere township, Buffalo county, was born in this township, Oct. 4, 1866, son of William Sr. and Elizabeth Herold, the parents being natives of Germany. William Herold Sr., the father, was three times married, and by his first wife had nine children - Caroline, Henry, Ernest, William A. (Jr) , August, Gottleib, Bernhardt, Lydia, and a daughter who died in infancy. Of those who grew to maturity, Caroline, who was twice married, and August, are now deceased. Of William Sr's second marriage there were three children born: Bertha, wife of George Johnson; Herman, who married Amelia Ellers, and Ida, who married Rudolph Falkenstein. By his third wife William Herold Sr. had no children.

William A. Herold Jr. at an early age began to learn the blacksmith's trade, working for his father until he attained his majority. After that he worked independently, first for one year at Herold, and then for a year at Ferney, S. D. Then returning to Buffalo county, he bought the blacksmiths shop at Herold and operated it for 15 years, or until September, 1903. He then sold the shop and rented for two years the farm in section 16, which he subsequently purchased, and on which he made his home for the rest of his life. Here Mr. Herold carried on mixed farming very successfully, paying particular attention to dairying and the raising of swine. At his death he left his farm in good condition. Of the 124 acres it contains, 100 acres are cleared. The house is a good frame building. The barn, measuring 36 by 100 feet, is provided with a stone basement, and there is also a silo constructed of cement blocks, a granary and other outbuildings. Mr. Herold was also the owner of another farm, containing 60 acres, which he bought from his father. A kind husband and father, he was also a good neighbor, friendly in his disposition, and ever ready to lend a helping hand to those in distress. His life was peaceful and comparatively uneventful, but the value of his character was recognized and his loss was deplored throughout the community.

Mr. William A. Herold was married Aug. 23, 1892, to Paulina Kellar, who was born Nov. 29, 1873, daughter of Franz and Mary Kellar, natives of Germany. The mother is still living. The four children of Mr. and Mrs. Kellar were: Jacob, who married Cora Muehleisen; Frank, who married Ida Bardil; Lizzie, wife of Herman Korb, and Paulina, widow of the subject of this sketch.

Mr. and Mrs. William A. Herold were the parents of ten children, most of whom are residing on the home farm with their mother. Their names, with dates of birth, are as follows: Franklin, March 9, 1893; Arnold, Nov. 15, 1894; Edgar, Dec. 15, 1896; Alvin, April 22, 1899; Diona, Jan. 5, 1902; Permilla, Aug. 22, 1904; Merrill, Dec. 9, 1906; Evelyn, Oct. 4, 1909; Wilfred, Jan. 18, 1913, and Loretta, Dec. 10, 1915. The family attend the E. A. church at Herold.
