William was the son of John and Anna Glower Stewart. His family came to Canada when he was very young, and then later settled in Clayton County, Iowa.

William served in the Civil War Civil Co. B, 4th Cav, Iowa.
He moved to Butler County, Kansas in 1869. In 1889, the family moved to Oklahoma where they homesteaded in Logan County.

He married Harriet Ellen Reed 3 July 1872 in Sedgwick Co., KS
Their children: Jeanette, Ida, Zoah, Jennie, Walter Scott.
