Madison B. Matt Peed was the only child of William M. Peed and Julia Ann (Berry) Peed, but he had nine older half-siblings from his father's first marriage to Elizabeth and two half-brothers from his mother's first marriage to James Madison Berry. Matt was born in Mason Co., Kentucky and was a young toddler when his father moved the family to Prairie Twp., Henry Co., Indiana where Matt was raised.
Matt married Eliza J. Consand in Henry Co., Indiana on 14 Nov. 1875.
He later married Belle McGaffin (daughter of Robert & Mary (Martin) McGaffin) on 28 November 1883. Their first child, Ralph Mattison Peed was born in Newcastle, Henry Co., Indiana on January 5, 1885. Matt was a carpenter and after he married Belle, he "went West" to find work and a place to live. He eventually settled in Meade, Meade Co., Kansas and sent for Belle and the baby. They rode the train to Dodge City which was as far as the train went at the time. Matt met them there and they arrived in Meade by wagon on July 4th, 1886. The Peed's second child, Julia Isabella was born in Meade on September 28, 1886.
Matt Peed did well in Meade having a construction business. One day while working on the Presbyterian Church he became extremely sick with stomach pains. Two days later he was dead. His obituary in the December 3rd 1887 'Meade County Democrat' said "....Madison B. He contracted among the first buildings that were erected in Meade Center. in January, 1886, he was elected first regular county clerk of Meade county, which office he filled with honor to himself and usefulness to the county. Mr. Peed was a christian in every sense of the word, a faithful member of the Christian church and one ofour best Sunday school workers. We know that he has received from the Great Father of fathers the well deserved plaudit, "Well done thou good and faithful servant."
Sometime after his death, his widow Belle, married S. Douglas Adams in Meade.
